Infront of the entrance of the ruins, is situated the suburb of the roman ostia, there is an area characterized by archeological and monumental witnessing that from the classical period arrives up to the modern age, in which are included the village and the fortress.

The area that up to the 1557 was touched by the Tiber is the one of the actual suburb of Ostia Antica.

ANCIENT OSTIA'S SUBURB DURING THE CENTURIES

During the IX Century with Greogory IV the city underwent to some renovations and he managed to gather the few Ostian population and protect them against the Saraceni, creating the so called Gregriopolis.

At the beginnings of the 400's with Pope Martino V (1417-1431), in order to enforce the territorial defense ordered the construccion of a tower surrounded by a pit. In fact the area was an important site since it was controlling all the activities on the Tiber.
