Fiumicino Boacciana Tower

Boacciana Tower

The Boacciana Tower traces its origins during the Middle ages. It was probably built on the foundations of traian lighthouse (98-117 A.d.). The name "Tor Boacciana" came from the roman family of the Bobazani which at the beginning of the XII Century was a wealthy Lord and land owner.

The Tower had the function of warning and controlling and it was probably the same tower seen by Richard the Lion Hearted in the 1190's when he disembarked on the ostiensis litoral during the journey for toward the third Crusade.

BOACCIANA TOWER DURNIG THE CENTURIES

The tower was used durnig the centuries as a lighthouse, as guardian tower on the river, as a custom duty, as an hostel for passerbys and lately as a stable and private house. In 1420, the pontiff Martino V ordered its total restauration.

Nowadays in front of the Tower we can admire a small island formed during a flood in 1557 which brought morfological changes at the outpouring of the Tiber.
