Port Claudio

The primitive port of ostia due to its narrowness was not allowing the ancorade of big boats. So these big boats were forced to remain in the open sea and some small ships were transporting the goods from the boats into the city of Rome through the tiber.

The port of Claudius was built in order to stop this situation;infact the emperor Claudius (41-54 AD) deccided to build another port of call even though the technicians were not supporting him.

The port was finished underneath the emperor Nero (54-68 AD) and shortly arround this dock was developed a city.

PORT OF CLAUDIUS AND ITS ARCHEOLOGICAL RUINS

The fines of the foundation of the right mole of port claudius excavated in 1957 are visible at the back of the ship museum. The structure is one km long towards the north and goes up to the airport fence. Inside there are nuomerous findings of the buildswhich allow us to understand better the structure and to analyze the materials that the Romans used to use.

Going towards via A. Guidoni where there is the entrance of the Roma- Fiumicino highway there is the archeologiacal area of Monte Giulio, from where there is a nice view of Port Claudius and some other finds such as thermal baths and some stores were dated around the late II Century A.d.
