Sacred Island

The Sacred Island is situated between the Port and the Ancient Ostia's Ruins, and it i the territory that Traianus transformed in artificial island with the carrying out of a canal connecting the Tiber and the sea (the Traian Pit).

In the first Century a.D. a road was connecting Ostia and the Port, crosing the sacred island being the main road. On the road it was developped a unique and big necropolis which was discovered during the 1920's and 40's due to the drainage of the territory.

THE SACRED ISLAND AND THE NECROPOLIS

The necropolis of the Sacred Island was really well preserved thanks to the shalving of determined by the activity of the river near to its outpouring.

There are graves built during theI, II and III Century a. D. But the most monumental grave is the family one on a squared form. On the facades of the graves there are inscriptions stating the occupation and the social status of the deceased.

The silent fascination of the dead city has increased due to the presence of decorative elements such as mosaics, paintings and plasters really well preserved.
