| In 41 d.c. emperor Claudius in order to overcome the difficulties related with the old fluvial port of Ostia, ordered the construction of a new port two miles away from the mouth of the Tiber. |

| Due to the progressive shelving of the Port of Claudius the Emperor Traiano (98-117 d.C.) started to build a second port that he named after himself. The dock was of an hexagonal form (each side measured 358 m with a diagonal of 716 m) and it had banks with walls having moorings built of stone. |

Boacciana Tower is situated on the scafa's bridge.The tower has medioeval origins (X century).
It was built on the left bank of the Tiber, in corrispondence with the ancient mouth of the Tiber which is about 1 km far from the actual one.
